Races of Dalelands -- Grassfolk (Halflings)

 Grassfolk (Halflings)

The Grassfolk, (referred individually as halflings) are a small race that are closely related to humans, if around half the size of most humans. They live in rural communities known as "Pecks" which are communities of 3-4 semi-interrelated extended families (400-500 Grassfolk). These Pecks are lead by the Elder (a older halfling respected in the community), the Sherriff, who keeps security for the community, and informally a council of locals who meet at the local watering hole.

Grassfolk, other then there short size, are noted for breeding of wardogs (which they use to defend their homes, and view them as part of their family, and are not for sale, but stud fees might be arranged), their joy of food and drink, and there wonderlust. All Grassfolk go on "a wondering" at least once in their life when they reach adulthood. For those who are wealthy heirs it might be just to the next Peck over, but for some it a lifetime of wondering (these forever travelling Grassfolk are known as "Tinkers" and there little wagons can be seen outside many towns carrying out trading) Many times a halfling will marry a partner they meet in their wonder, or resettle into a new Peck, which keeps the family trees from being too close.

Grassfolk, who get their name from their ability to hide in grasses and woods, are famous farmers, and are noted for their carrots, potatoes, grain, mushrooms, and pipe-weed (types of Nicotiana). While peaceful, they do have a reputation for being "burglars" and other petty crime, more so when they are "wondering". Also any attempt to attack a Peck or harm one of their beloved wardogs will result in a shockingly violent reaction.

Some sages have stated that the rare Esso Pigmies are grassfolk who reverted to hunter-gathering in the crisis. There is much debate to this day if they are of Grassfolk or short human stock.
